Anapoima

My first weekend in Colombia was amazing!  Ben’s father, Mauricio drove me, his mother Maryella and two of his best friends, Camilo and Adriana to his family’s holiday house near Anapoima. (Click on map to enlarge). We descended from the mountains into the valley, traveling about 75 km into a warmer zone.  We could not enjoy what I was told were spectacular views as we drove at night, however driving out of Bogota in the evening proved to be an event in itself as it was “dia de la velitas” (day of the little candles).  This is celebrated in Colombia and some parts of Venezuela on December 7th, the eve of the immaculate conception of the Virgin Mary. In the outer areas of Bogota families were all gathered outside in the streets, children lighting candles, parents chatting and couples dancing. It was a beautiful, friendly and lively scene.

Arriving at the house was a surprise!  Mauricio designed the house and it is a credit to his talents. He told me his influence was Thomas Jefferson’s house on his 5000 acre plantation, Monticello.  Jefferson was a self taught architect and Mauricio explained he built a main central section with two wings extending either side, one wing being for Jefferson’s black mistress!

Mauricio gave me a tour and I settled into the top “blue” room and could not wait for the morning to take in the views.  We nearly saw the dawn because we stayed up till 3:30am talking and having a wonderful time.  The next morning I went for a run to shake off my hangover and was amused to pass many armed guards.  The house next door is owned by the president.

Ben’s grandfather and Mauricio’s cousin, husband and 2 gorgeous children arrived in the morning. The whole weekend was magical!  For the first time in ages I enjoyed listening to music. Mauricio has an incredible knowledge of many styles over many eras and we had fun talking about various artists and sharing our favourites. Much wine was drunk, many swims and a few siestas.  Great conversations (although I did not understand a great deal!)  We had so much fun!
